The Toshiba M405 is essentially the same computer as the Toshiba M400. The specs for this computer can be customized, this this specific model came with: 12.1 inch screen, Intel Core Duo 1.8 Ghz, 2GB of RAM (upgraded from 1 GB), 100GB hard drive, Gb Ethernet, 802.11G wireless, DVD-RW optical drive, and a fingerprint reader.
This thing that makes this tablet stand out is the optical drive in such a small form factor. The battery life for even a two year old computer with the expansion slice battery is about 4 hours with Vista. Reasonable for a computer of this type, but newer batteries would offer even better performance.
The tablet is now just about two years old and is starting to show its age. There are wear spots on the body and the screen has dirt and dust accumulating behind it. Nether of these have hampered the actual productivity value, but it is not standing up as nicely as it could have. Not only do the gaps around the edges of the screen allow dirt to accumulate, the screen has a tendency to wobble slightly. While it doesn't hurt the functionality, it does hit at the possibility of the screen failing or snapping off.
Overall this is a decent tablet that does offer an optical drive in a very small form factor, something most other models do not. Toshiba has since been replaced this model with the Toshiba M700, which offers some major advantages over the M405/M400. Overall the Toshiba M405 is a solid Tablet PC, but it has since been replaced with an improved model. Therefore, the best decision would be to balance price with quality.
